Chloe Grace Moretz, the popular American actress, recently criticized the movie Boy Erased, a rival gay-themed film, for having a straight white male director. However, she later reconsidered her statement about queer movies needing to be told from a queer perspective. In an interview with the Herald Sun, the 21-year-old actress of The Miseducation of Cameron Post emphasized the importance of both films and expressed the belief that they should support each other.
“The more LGBTQ+ films we see on screen, the more representation and diversity we have,” said Chloe Grace Moretz, star of “The Miseducation of Cameron Post.” She emphasized the importance of supporting all queer movies and mentioned how working with bisexual female filmmaker Desiree Akhavan influenced her decision to be a part of the film. In the movie, Chloe portrays Cameron Post, a teenager sent to gay conversion therapy in the 90s by her guardians.
The enthusiastic 21-year-old individual, who previously criticized a competing film for its portrayal from a heterosexual perspective, strongly believes that both movies hold significance for the LGBTQ+ community and should be viewed together.
While promoting her latest project, Chloe mentioned to the LA Times that she couldn’t help but compare it to another film about conversion therapy. She pointed out that the other movie, backed by a major distributor with a big budget, was directed by a diverse, bisexual woman and featured a varied cast without relying on big-name celebrities. On the other hand, the comparison movie, “Boy Erased,” was helmed by a white male director and seemed to reflect a more traditional, straight male perspective. The contrast between the two films was striking to Chloe, who highlighted the disparity in distribution and support between the two projects.
The upcoming film Boy Erased, which features Australian stars Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe and is helmed by director Joel Edgerton, is already set for distribution and is expected to make a big impact upon its release.
